The Savings Bank Mutual Life Insurance Company of Massachusetts, together with its affiliates (collectively, “SBLI,” “we,” “us” and “our”), is committed to respecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy describes the types of personal information we collect from and about you when you interact with us online, including when use our websites, such as https://www.sbli.com/, https://www.sblibrokerage.com/, https://www.sbliagent.com/, my.sbli.com, https://www.legacyshield.com/, and any other websites, platforms (including the LegacyShield platform), and mobile applications that link to this Privacy Policy (the “Platform”). This Privacy Policy also describes how we use and share your personal information, and the choices that are available to you with respect to your personal information.
We may revise this Privacy Policy periodically, and in such a case we will revise the date at the top of this Privacy Policy accordingly. Changes to this Privacy Policy are effective at the time they are published, and therefore we encourage you to review this Privacy Policy from time to time. Additionally, this Privacy Policy may be supplemented or amended from time to time by other notices posted elsewhere, including on specific pages of our Platform, or in our published materials.
SBLI insurance customers: If you are a current or former customer of SBLI, we will handle the personal information we have collected or processed from or about you in connection with your purchase of insurance products or services in accordance with our consumer insurance product Privacy Notice.
LegacyShield users: SBLI’s LegacyShield platform includes a digital vault that allows SBLI to deliver policy documents to customers electronically and allows customers to, among other things, upload and store documents and information (including non-SBLI documents and information), final wishes, family photos, videos, and more. SBLI will not use or share these materials, or the information contained in these materials, for any purpose other than to provide the LegacyShield services to you. SBLI also licenses the LegacyShield platform to financial advisors, insurance brokers, insurance carriers, or other financial institutions (each, a “Partner”) for their customers’ use. If you use the LegacyShield platform as a customer of a Partner, we encourage you to review the privacy policies of such Partner so that you understand how that Partner collects, uses, and shares your information. We are not responsible for the privacy policies or practices of any Partner.
California residents: If you are a California resident, we will handle the personal information we have collected from or about you, in contexts not covered by our consumer insurance product Privacy Notice, in accordance with our California Consumer Privacy Act Notice. In addition, please review the document titled Important Privacy Choice for California Consumers, which allows you to request that SBLI restrict its sharing of your personal information with third parties in certain circumstances.
1. Personal Information We Collect
The personal information we collect depends on how you interact with us online, and may include:
- Device Information: When you visit our Platform or interact with our emails or digital advertisements we may learn information about your browser or device, including your browser or device name or type, version, and settings; your IP address, unique online identifiers (e.g., MAC address and mobile device identifiers), and internet service provider; the name and version of your operating system; the referring and exit pages; and the date and time of your visit or interaction.
- Usage Data: We collect information about your interactions with our Platform, digital advertisements, and emails, including the pages you visit, links or buttons you click, the search terms you enter, and other similar interactions with our Platform, emails, or digital advertisements.
- Location Data: When you visit our Platform, open our emails, or interact with our digital advertisements, we may learn your non-precise geographic location, including by collecting your IP address or other device information.
- Contact Information: We may collect your contact information, including your first and last name, postal address or zip code, telephone number, and email address.
- Insurance Policy Information (including insurance quotes, applications, and underwriting): We collect information about you in connection with insurance policy quotes, applications and underwriting processes, including the following types of information you provide to us or we otherwise collect or generate in connection with your quote, application, or policy:
- Personal Identifiers including your first and last name, Social Security number, driver’s license or state identification number, and signature.
- Health and Health Insurance Information including your physical characteristics (height, weight, etc.) and information that concerns your health (including information about your health record and history and any medical conditions or diagnoses you may have), as well information about your health insurance.
- Demographic Information including your age, sex and gender identity, national origin and citizenship or immigration status, marital status, professional or employment-related information (e.g., employer, title, etc.), education information, and other similar demographic details.
- Application and Underwriting Identifiers and Policy Numbers, meaning a unique identifying number, an underwriting case identifier, and a policy number (as applicable) that we assign to your quote or application for insurance, or your actual insurance policy.
- Beneficiary Information, including the names and contact information of the beneficiaries of your policies.
- Payment Card Information, Payment Details, and Purchase Histories: We will collect your payment card information and other details of your purchase of SBLI products and services online. We may also collect information concerning any SBLI products or services you’ve considered purchasing, or other purchasing or consuming histories or tendencies.
- Text, email, and chat records: If you text, email, contact us via a webform on the Platform or on our social media pages, or interact with our Platform’s chatbot, we may keep records of those conversations including any information you have provided to us in connection with such conversation.
- Submitted Content: We collect any content you submit to us or upload via the Platform or email, including documents, files, photos, videos, and feedback.
- Preferences: We may collect information about your preferences about receiving communications from us via email or text, and about receiving our newsletter and marketing communications.
- Account Credentials: If you register an account with SBLI, we collect your account credentials, including your account log-in name and password.
- Inferences: We may draw inferences about any of the information above that may relate to your preferences, characteristics, or other matters.
SBLI may also de-identify or aggregate the above information, at which time it is no longer “personal information.” We will not reidentify or attempt to reidentify such information.
2. How We Collect Your Personal Information
We may collect the information described above from various sources, including directly from you, from third parties we partner with, and through cookies or other automated means.
- Directly from You: Much of the information listed in Section 1 we collect directly from you when you provide it to us, including when you submit it via webforms available in our Platform (including when requesting a quote or applying for an insurance policy); contact us for assistance or with questions or comments; provide Submitted Content to us through our Platform or via email; register or update an SBLI account; or respond to an online survey.
- From Third Parties: We may also receive information from third-party service providers and business partners that assist with the operation and functionality of our Platform our business more generally, including data analytics companies, data integration companies, advertising and marketing companies, and email and chatbot service providers. If you use the LegacyShield platform as a customer of a Partner, we may receive personal information about you directly from such Partner.
- Automatically from Your Device or Browser: Certain information (e.g., Device Information and Usage Data) is automatically collected from your device or browser when you visit our Platform, open our emails, or interact with our digital advertisements.
- Using Cookies and Similar Technologies: SBLI may use cookies (small files stored on your device or browser), pixel tags (tiny graphic images embedded in a website, app, or email), and other similar technologies to automatically collect information when you visit our Platform or interact with our emails or digital advertisements, including, for example, Device Information, Usage Data, and Location Data. Through the use of cookies and similar technologies, we may link information about your interactions with our Platform, emails, or digital advertisements over time, for example, which pages you visit, which links or buttons you click, and how long you stay on each page.
We also partner with third-party advertising, marketing, and data analytics companies (including certain social media advertising partners) that use cookies, pixel tags, or similar technologies to collect information about your interactions with our Platform, emails, and digital advertisements, and your interactions with other websites and digital platforms, and that use and share the information gathered to deliver ads more tailored to your interests. We receive information from these third parties to understand our advertising effectiveness and to understand the operation, functionality, and use of the Platform. The collection and use of your information by our Platform analytics provider, Google Analytics, is governed by Google’s privacy policy, which can be found here.

3. How We Use Your Personal Information
How we use the personal information we collect depends on how you interact with us. The purposes for which we use your personal information may include:
- Providing, Maintaining, and Improving our Platform and Services: We use your personal information to provide and maintain the Platform and the features and functionality therein, including by using your preferences and other collected information to personalize your experience on the Platform, and to identify and authenticate you so you may use the Platform. We may also use your personal information to monitor the usage of our Platform and improve and develop new services.
- Providing Quotes, Processing Applications, and Underwriting and Servicing Policies: We use your personal information to provide an insurance quote you request, process an application you submit, and provide our insurance products and services to you (including underwriting and payment processing, if applicable).
- Communications: We use your personal information to communicate with you, including to respond to your requests and inquiries via email and through our chatbot, and to ask for feedback through surveys, questionnaires, or other messages.
- Advertising and Marketing: We use your personal information to advertise and market SBLI services, including online, via email and direct mail, and using other communication channels, including through partnerships with social media platforms and internet search engines. SBLI participates in interest-based advertising (also referred to as “cross-context behavioral advertising” or “targeted advertising”), meaning we use third-party advertising companies to display ads tailored to your individual interests based on how you browse and shop online, as well as to provide advertising-related services such as ad delivery, reporting, attribution, analytics, and market research. We also allow third-party advertising and analytics companies to collect certain information when you visit our Platform. This information is used to serve ads for SBLI services or for the products or services of other companies when you visit other websites. Additionally, if you choose to communicate or provide certain Submitted Content (e.g., reviews of or feedback about our Platform or services), we may use such Submitted Content for advertising and marketing purposes.
- Understanding Our Customers: We use your personal information to analyze your activity while visiting our Platform and interacting with our emails and digital advertisements. We keep track of the pages you visit and the manner in which you use the Platform in order to determine which pages and features are most popular and whether to make changes. We may, from time to time, review your information and information of other Platform visitors to help us analyze trends, browsing patterns and preferences, and demographics.
- Facilitating Promotions: We use your personal information when you participate in the contests, sweepstakes, or other promotions we offer.
- Providing and Maintaining SBLI Accounts: We use your personal information to operate SBLI accounts, including by making certain services available to our account users.
- Maintaining Security: We use your personal information in order to protect SBLI, our service providers and business partners, and our users and customers from fraud, security threats, and other illegal or harmful activity.
- Complying with Legal Obligations: We use your personal information when needed to comply with legal and regulatory requirements and to respond to requests from courts or other governmental or regulatory authorities.
4. How We Share Personal Information with Third Parties
We may share information with third parties for certain purposes. For example, we may share information with:
- Service Providers and Business Partners: We may share certain personal information with third-party software and service providers and other business partners that assist with many aspects of our Platform and our business more generally, including underwriting evaluation and data providers, payment processers, data analytics providers, advertising and marketing service providers and partners, email and chatbot providers, and data hosting providers.
- Affiliates or Successors: We may share certain personal information with our affiliates for our affiliates’ use. Your information may also be transferred to another entity that succeeds to all or part of our business in connection with a sale, reorganization, consolidation, or merger.
- Other Third Parties: We will disclose information about you to third parties, including to government bodies or law enforcement agencies, when we believe it to be necessary for compliance with the law or to protect SBLI, our users and customers, our employees, and the public more generally. For example we may disclose specific personal information if we reasonably believe it is necessary to: (i) investigate any suspected fraud or misuse of the Platform or our services; (ii) protect or defend the rights, property, or interests of SBLI, our employees, our customers, or the rights, property, or interests of our affiliates, business partners, or service providers; or (iii) protect the personal safety of our employees, users and customers, and the public.
- At Your Request: We will disclose your personal information to other third parties at your direction or with your consent. For example, if you use our Legacy Shield platform in connection with an insurance provider that is not SBLI, we will share the information that you upload to your digital vault, at your direction, with such insurance provider.
Likewise, we will share your personal information with your family members or other individuals to whom you designate your personal information may be shared, for example, beneficiaries of your insurance policies, spouses, family members, lawyers, accountants and other persons. The list of persons who may view your SBLI account and information may be updated by you through the Platform at any time. You acknowledge that your SBLI account and personal information may be shared with such persons posthumously in connection with the viewing of relevant policies and benefits contained in your SBLI account.
5. Your Privacy Choices
- User requests: You can contact us at any time using the using one of the methods provided in Section 11 (“Contact Us”) to request we do any of the following: (i) erase or delete all or some of your personal information; (ii) change, update, or correct your personal information; (iii) restrict how we use all or some of your personal information; (iv) access your personal information and, where applicable and feasible, request to receive that personal information in a commonly used electronic format (or ask for this information to be provided in that format to a third party); or (v) disclose what personal information we collect, use, or disclose. You may also request that we stop sharing your personal information with third parties for certain purposes. We will consider and respond to any such requests promptly, and otherwise in accordance with applicable laws.
- Emails: You can unsubscribe from our marketing emails by clicking the unsubscribe link in the footer of such email.
- Direct Marketing: You can remove your name from our direct marketing mailing list by contacting us using one of the methods provided in Section 11 (“Contact Us”).
- Text Messaging: You can unsubscribe to our text-messaging communications at any time by texting “STOP” to any message from the service you wish to cancel. - Cookies: You may opt out of certain third-party cookies by following your browser’s instructions or by using the s provided by the following industry groups:

Please note that online cookie opt-outs are device and browser-specific. You may still see interest-based ads from us when using a different device or browser, unless you also opt-out using that device or browser.
Furthermore, if you opt out of our cookies, you may experience some inconvenience in your use of the Platform.
6. Chatbot Policy
SBLI has integrated chatbots into certain parts of our Platform that are intended to support users with general questions and requests for information about our products and services. Your interactions with any of our chatbots are voluntary. You alone decide whether to interact with the chatbot, and what information to disclose about yourself to us when you choose to interact with the chatbot. YOUR CONVERSATIONS WITH OUR CHATBOT MAY BE MONITORED AND RECORDED BY OR ON BEHALF OF SBLI AND SHARED WITH THIRD PARTIES. SBLI will use the information you disclose to us via the chatbot, which may include your personal information, together with any associated metadata, (i) to respond to your inquires and requests, and (ii) to analyze, evaluate, and improve our products and services. We may disclose this information (including the record of your chatbot conversation) to our service providers, which include providers of data analytics, customer database service providers, and service providers that assist with the operation and functionality of our Platform and our business more generally (including the service provider that provides the chatbot feature). We will retain the information collected via the chatbot and the associated metadata for as long as reasonably necessary for the purpose in which it was collected, unless we are required by law to dispose of it earlier or to keep it longer. We will also retain this information as necessary to comply with our legal obligations, resolve disputes, pursue legitimate business interests, conduct audits, and protect or enforce our rights.
7. Security
Although we use reasonable safeguards to protect your personal information, we cannot guarantee the security of information provided over the Internet or stored in our databases. Your transmissions are, therefore, at your own risk. You can help protect your information by selecting strong, unique passwords for your SBLI account and any associated email addresses.
8. Retention
We will retain your personal information for the length of time needed to fulfill the purposes outlined in this Privacy Policy unless a longer retention period is required or permitted by law.
9. SBLI Terms of Use

10. Links to Other Platform; Social Media Platforms
Our Platform may, from time to time, contain links to websites owned and operated by third parties (“Third-Party Websites”). We encourage you to review the privacy policies of such Third-Party Websites so that you understand how they collect, use, and share your information. We are not responsible for the privacy policies or other content on Third-Party Websites.
If you engage or communicate with SBLI on a social media platform (e.g., Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, etc.), we may communicate with you via direct message or use other social media tools to interact with you. In these instances, your communications and interactions with us are governed by this Privacy Policy as well as the privacy policy of the social media platform you use.
